Clara Bow was a Brooklyn native and according to the movie database, the first film actress to portray rebellious youth (as a flapper) and to become a sex symbol--see http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001966/bio
She retired from film at age 26! Last film was titled Hoop-La.
